The Central Ohio Branch of the National League of American Pen Women announces it will have a reception of professional women artists from several disciplines on April 28th, from 5 to 8:30, at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. It is free to the public.
Josie Merckle and Leslie Robinson will portray Alice Schille and Erma Bombeck, respectively. An exhibition of members will be on display in the Cultural Arts Center Galleries. NLAPW will present the music of the Columbus Koto Ensemble, plus compositions by music award winners.
The showcase is part of the 51st National Biennial of The National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) in Columbus, Ohio, April 26-28 at the Westin Great Southern Hotel.
NLAPW is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports and promotes professional women in arts, letters, music, and allied professions. Formed in 1897, the prestigious NLAPW is the oldest women’s arts organization in the United States.
“To Create, Takes Courage,” the 2024 theme was inspired by member Georgia O’Keefe’s quote, “To create one’s world in any of the arts takes courage.” The Ohio Branch pays homage to her tenacity and courage to find her creative voice. Past and present members include Erma Bombeck (author), Alice Schille (artist), Pearl S. Buck (author), Vinnie Ream (sculptor), Eudora Welty (author), Helen Keller (author), Amy Beach (pianist and composer), Carrie Jacobs Bond (composer, singer, and pianist), Maya Ying Lin (sculptor), and Maya Angelou (author).
Women from over fifty branches, plus members-at-large, will converge in Columbus to showcase their work at the historic Columbus Cultural Arts Center. Keynote speakers will be Nannette Maciejunes (director emeritus of the Columbus Museum of Art, National Biennial art juror), Angela Meleca (CEO of Meleca Creative Advisors), and Linda Kass (owner of Gramercy Bookstore and author).
Grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, the Johnstone Fund for New Music, and the Reynolds Family underwrote the National Biennial.
Members of NLAPW are professional writers, journalists, painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, choreographers, art teachers, theater and film directors — and many others from all creative fields.
The art exhibition will be available April 12 – May 16.
