“The faster I write the better my output. If I’m going slow I’m in trouble. It means I’m pushing the words instead of being pulled by them.”
– Raymond Chandler
Hello Writing Friends:
Virginia Woolf recommended writing 1,000 words a day. Carolyn See, author of Making a Literary Life, limits her daily 1,000 words to Monday through Friday. The only catch is that neither kvetching nor your grocery list count. Other than this minor detail, it’s not difficult. Five hand written pages. If you type, it’s a page and a half single spaced or three and a half double spaced pages. I’m having fun with it. I feel like a “real” writer after I’ve finished my 1,000 words each day. I like the no excuses tone of it. It’s simple too. One thousand words a day and then I can go each some chocolate.
This type of commitment may not appeal to you. But, writers must write. What kind of commitment are you willing to make? Write it down in one sentence. Be specific. The average sentence contains 15 words. That only leaves 985. See how easy it is?
Let me know how you do.
